Symptoms of Children's Allergies

Is your child’s runny nose and coughing caused by allergies?

Since allergies present differently depending on the age of your child, it isn’t always easy to be able to spot whether your child is dealing with allergies or perhaps just a cold. Symptoms may be mild enough that you may overlook certain allergy symptoms in your little one. Of course, it’s important to pinpoint the warning signs so that you can turn to our Pleasanton and San, Ramon CA, pediatricians for simple, painless allergy testing.

Allergies are more likely to cause symptoms such as,

  • Itchy, watery and (sometimes) red eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Runny or stuffed nose
  • Sore throat

It’s important to note that children do not develop fevers with allergies. If your child has a fever,  an infection (not allergies) is most likely to blame. If your older child develops a fever over 102.2 F, it’s a good idea to schedule an immediate checkup with our Pleasanton and San, Ramon CA, pediatricians. When it comes to a fever if you’re not sure whether your child should visit a doctor or not just give us a call.

Common childhood allergies include,

  • Outdoor allergies: insect stings and bites, pollen, ragweed
  • Indoor allergies: dust mites, mold and pet dander
  • Food allergies: shellfish, peanuts, gluten, fish, dairy, eggs and soy
  • Irritants: cigarette smoke, laundry detergent and cleaning products

How do you test for allergies in children?

If your child displays allergy symptoms our Pleasanton and San, Ramon CA, pediatricians can perform a simple, noninvasive skin prick test that will allow us to determine what is causing your child’s symptoms in as little as 15 minutes. You’ll also get answers and a solution to your little one’s allergies in the same visit.

How are allergies treated?

While changing your child’s daily routine to minimize exposure to offending allergies can help greatly, a pediatrician will most likely recommend either an over-the-counter or prescription medication such as an antihistamine. If a patient is dealing with more serious allergy symptoms our team may recommend immunotherapy such as allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy.

If your child is dealing with allergies, our Pleasanton and San, Ramon CA, pediatricians at TRI-Valley Pediatrics can help your little one get their symptoms under control with proper lifestyle changes and medications. To schedule an evaluation with our team, call us at (925) 460-8444 or (925) 380-6230.
