How to Tell if Your Child Has an Ear Infection

Little boy picking ear feeling curious looking outside.

Ear infections are among the most common childhood illnesses, especially in infants and toddlers. But because young children can’t always tell you what’s wrong, it’s up to parents to watch for the signs. At TRI-Valley Pediatrics Inc., with locations in Pleasanton and San Ramon, we help parents navigate these uncomfortable—but treatable—childhood conditions.

So how do you know if your child might have an ear infection?

Common Signs of an Ear Infection

An ear infection occurs when bacteria or viruses cause inflammation in the middle ear. Symptoms can come on quickly and may include:

  • Fussiness or crying more than usual
  • Tugging or pulling at the ears
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Hearing difficulties or unresponsiveness to sound
  • Fever (especially in infants)
  • Fluid draining from the ear
  • Loss of balance
  • Reduced appetite

If your child shows any combination of these signs—particularly with a fever—it’s a good idea to contact your pediatrician.

Why Do Children Get Ear Infections So Often?

Children are more prone to ear infections than adults due to the shape and size of their eustachian tubes (the canals that drain fluid from the middle ear). These tubes are shorter and more horizontal in young children, making it easier for fluid and germs to become trapped.

Ear infections often follow colds or upper respiratory infections. Allergies and exposure to smoke can also increase risk.

When to See a Pediatrician

If symptoms last more than a day or two, if your child is under six months old, or if they’re in obvious pain, it’s important to seek medical care. The team at TRI-Valley Pediatrics can examine your child’s ears and determine whether antibiotics, pain relief, or simply rest and monitoring is the best course of action.
